loan + scott | HAGGIN OAKS SACRAMENTO WEDDING

From the moment I heard Loan and Scott’s love story (which you can read more about on my blog post of their engagement session!), I have been counting down the days until their wedding. I knew that their wedding theme, “Love Grows”, would mean natural and organic florals arranged to set my heart astir, but even then, I was blown away by the absolute beauty of the day. Beyond the details and decor, what ultimately struck me most was the close connection between Loan and Scott’s incredible family and friends. Throughout all of the late nights spent handcrafting decorations and preparing for the multiple traditional ceremonies, it was easy to see how a huge mutual love for Loan and Scott brought together this loving community.

The day began at Loan’s family home for a luncheon, featuring an entire roast pig, and the traditional Vietnamese ruoc dau ceremony, during which the groom and his family arrive to pick up the bride for the wedding. Loan, in a Vietnamese-inspired gown, and Scott, first paid respects to Loan’s deceased family members, and then honored both sets of their parents by serving tea and thanking them for their steadfast love and support through the years. Everyone was in tears, but my favorite moment was when they poured tea for Loan’s elderly grandfather and he offered his own personal blessings for the couple.

The day was already off to an emotional note, but this was only the beginning! After a quick round of portraits, the girls and I raced to The Westin Sacramento, where we helped Loan from one beautiful gown into the next. We captured some beautiful getting ready portraits next to the soft window light, and after that, it was off to St. Anthony’s Church for the ceremony, where Loan and Scott followed up their first kiss as husband and wife with a high five!

We arrived together at our final destination, The Pavillion at Haggin Oaks, which was transformed by the bride and her bridal party into a page straight from a storybook. Everything was handmade with love, including the centerpieces, twinkle-light tent backdrop, corn-hole set, and (my personal favorite!) a drafting table-inspired seating chart to honor these two architects on their special day.

As the guests dove in to the delicious spread of kettle corn, macarons and madeleines, and the dancing began, I took the bridal party outside for a second round of portraits just as the sun began to set. As I photographed the newly married couple on the Haggin Oaks lawn surrounded by sunlight, I remembered the way Scott first saw Loan from across the quad at UC Berkeley. I wonder if he could have guessed he would one day be standing on another grassy lawn, hand in hand with her as husband and wife!
